For optimal burning, trim your candlewick to 1/4" before each use. This helps to ensure a longer, cleaner-burning experience. If your candlewick is too long, it can create smoke and a hotter flame.
For the initial burn, trim the wick and allow your candle to burn until the entire top layer has melted across. This helps to ensure that subsequent burns are even and will not create tunnelling.
Never let your candle burn for longer than 4 hours, as this may cause the vessel to overheat. Do not leave your candle unattended. Do not burn your candle once there is only 1/4" of wax left in the vessel, as this may overheat the bottom of your vessel and damage the surface that it is on.
If your candle has gemstones or other decorations on top of the wax, these will sink down with the wax as it melts. If you would like to keep them after your candle is done, the wax can be removed from the vessel using one of the methods described above, and the crystals can be rinsed off with warm, soapy water in a sieve or cheesecloth.
At Rural Candles, sustainability is an important and guiding principle for our business. We encourage you to find ways to repurpose your candle vessels at home, and we've designed our candles to make that easy by using only pure plant-based waxes and a very minimal amount of wick adhesive.
When you're finished burning your candle and only 1/4 inch of wax remains in the vessel, it's time to give it a new life. There are two recommended ways to clean the residual wax from your candle vessel.
Freezer Method
Place your used candle into the freezer for a short time until the wax has hardened, then use a spoon to pop out the remaining wax and wick. The vessel can then be sponge-washed with warm soapy water and it will be as good as new.
Oven Method
Heat your oven to the lowest setting. Place your used candle upside-down on a rack over a paper-lined baking tray to catch the melted wax. Once the wax has melted out of the vessel and everything has cooled enough to touch, you can remove the wick tab with a spoon, and then sponge-wash the vessel in warm soapy water.
Your empty candle vessel can now find a new life in your home as a container for your favourite flower in your bedroom, makeup brushes in your bathroom, or a beverage by the fireside.
